The gasket itself typically costs between 10 and 40, but the average cost of replacement ranges from 110 to 340, with labor charges being the main factor contributing to the increase in cost. The flexibility of the inner seal, however, was a little more problematic - being softer, it more easily caught on the top of the spark plug tubes and bunched up instead of sliding down, around the tube(s). The cost of replacing a valve cover gasket can vary based on the make and model of the vehicle and the complexity of the job. The Fel-pro seals, when lubed up, were fairly easy to just push into place in the valve cover with 2 thumbs.the firmness of the inner seal that eventually surrounds the tube allowed them to more definitively "pop" into place around the tubes without any coaxing. The Mahle are less flexible all around, and slightly larger - necessitating a 30mm socket to bang them into place.OEM Mahle tube seals and Fel-pro seals behave VERY differently (after tearing my initial set of Fel-pro, I had to buy a replacement set of Mahle).indeed the spark plug tube seals in the valve cover are intended to go fully around the tubes - hugging it totally and allowing the tubes to go completely through (only tube can be felt/seen mating with the valve cover holes).Note: To ease the removal of the valve covers, remove the power steering pump with its hoses connected. What I learned about my question above regarding spark plug tube seals/gaskets: If your installer customers complain about knocking or ticking from either cylinder head on a Honda 3.5L here are the steps to remove and install the cylinder heads. One certainly had to remove them with mallet and screwdrive/chisel, and I can see how people could damage the valve cover at those locations.FWIW I was successful. The old grommets for the sparkplug tubes are hardened and are likely bonded to the valve cover. It could also be someone previously did a lousy valve job and damaged it. I am not sure if that is what you have here. There were some old threads on here about valve cover melted at the same location due to arcing. It either looked chewed up or melted, and I would not reuse that valve cover. It's already a PITA with the front cover out.Īlso, not sure why but the front cover seems to leak before the rear valve cover in most cases. I can't imagine trying to access and work on the rear one without removing the front cover. The rear one is twice as hard to work on. Otherwise, the front valve cover would have to come out again for access to the rear one later. Is there a reason for you not to trust your mechanic?ĭepending on the mileage, I would do them both at the same time (valve cover gasket and valve adjustment). One certainly had to remove them with mallet and screwdrive/chisel, and I can see how people could damage the valve cover at those locations. May not work on it this time.Ĭlick to expand. It either looked chewed up or melted, and I would not reuse that valve cover. Should I only change gasket on the front? Not do the adjustment this time? Or just adjust valve on the one side. Asks me to adjust valve when I hear ticking noise. Valve Cover Gasket Replacement Service On average, the cost for a Honda Odyssey Valve Cover Gasket Replacement is 149 with 54 for parts and 95 for labor. saying it is tiring and lots work.I may not have valve problem for another 50k. Will that be an issue? He is not willing to do the work on the valve adjustment. If I adjust valve and change valve gasket only on the front. Leave everything (gasket and valve) unchanged in the back until it leaks… The Fleet: Bolt - 2006 Honda Odyssey - EX - Ocean Mist Metallic - 110k miles - Bought brand new in August 2006, never any major repairs, possibly the most reliable Odyssey on the road. Or only adjust front valve and change out front gasket set. People who use gasket maker on these usually end up with a CEL code for the spool valve afterwards. Now he is saying not doing the valve adjustment if there is no issue. The mechanic is short on time… I scheduled with him three weeks ago to do front and back valve adjustment and valve cover gasket. Looks like the recommendation is keep using it? Here is a short YouTube video on the valve cover I got from the mechanic.
